LORENZOACQUAVIVA

Lorenzo Acquaviva is an Italian actor.

Lorenzo Acquaviva is also co-author of the "Dr Jekyll and Mr AIDS" play, in which he represents Mr AIDS, who illustrates the history of the HIV pandemic under a very different and peculiar point of view – that of the virus itself.

His long successful career brought him from theatre to television and cinema. He is the creator of the Museum-theatre show "A Coffee with the Baron", where he presents the story of the Barone Revoltella - one of the key personalities in the opening of the Suez Channel - going through his fascinating life and deeds during the last decades of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

MAURIZIOBOTTA

Professor Botta observes the world through the eyes of a chemist. "I believe that everything is made of molecules", he says, "and my belief is that organic molecules are the key to developing a therapy against infectious diseases such as AIDS". His team is searching for molecules to fight HIV and anti-HIV drug resistance.

Professor Botta: “We develop drugs that target a protein in the shell of HIV. This protein is essential for HIV replication, so it is the Achilles' heel of the virus. We expect that HIV cannot become resistant to drugs that target this essential protein.”

AIDS is one of the most serious pandemic diseases of the modern era. Therapies based on the interruption of the HIV replication cycle exist, but these therapies fail increasingly often due to the emergence of drug resistance. Hence, there is an urgent need for novel drugs and alternative therapeutic strategies.

Prof. Botta is the scientific Coordinator of the project THINPAD - Targeting the HIV-1 Nucleocapsid Protein to fight Antiretroviral Drug Resistance - based at the University of Siena, Italy. He participates to the show as "Dr Jekill", representing an outstanding point of view and a free academic voice on this global issue.

Francesca Serra is a science communicator and writer, creator of "Dr Jekyll and Mr AIDS" and co-author - with Lorenzo Acquaviva - of the script for the science-theatre.

She works at the  SISSA University, in Trieste, Italy, as a communication manager for the EU funded project CommHERE - Communicating Health Research in Europe - coordinated by the Karolinska Institute (Denmark).

Editor of the Italian online magazine ricerca&medicina and co-editor of the English online magazine HorizonHealth.eu, she is also the organizer of science outreach events for the general public.

At ESOF 2014 Francesca will present her activities within the project "Think global, act local: how to engage and empower your scientific community".
