Opening Night - Trieste

Dr Jekyll and Mr AIDS, an innovative science-theatre script talks about a deadly issue: AIDS. But despite the seriousness of the subject, the disease will be presented for the first time by the virus itself, Mr AIDS, who decided to come out to tell the truth about his activities and goals.

"Why a comedy featuring the HIV virus? Because it's high time we start to know AIDS for what it is, without social preconceptions" says Francesca Serra, one of the authors of the script and event organizer. "Too often men tend to associate diseases to some kind of divine punishment, as a reflection of personal misconduct and sordid behavior; despite our advancement in science and technology, we still do it, and AIDS is a very good example.

In the United States, the AIDS outburst was first recognized as a disease in the early 80s and defined according to the population it was spreading most quickly through. In fact, it was referred to as the ‘disease of the 4Hs, (Haitian, heroin addict, homosexuals and hemophiliacs).

For many years the walls of this ghetto stigmatized racial origins or sexual habits, allowing an undisturbed spreading of the disease among groups that felt same.

But nobody is safe!

The best way to prevent the infection is by knowing the facts from the very voice of Mr AIDS, who will tell us his true story, without any acrimony or racism and most of all, why he loves us so much.

Mr AIDS at Palladium, Rome

Mr AIDS will travel around Europe.

He could not believe that the only presentation of his masterpiece could possibly take place in the small God-forgotten town of Trieste. Thankfully the other cities decided it was time to have him as a guest.

It is already embarrassing enough always having Prof. Maurizio Botta, from the University of Siena around him all the time, confuting all his theories, so  please give him the well-deserved fame.

Mr AIDS comments <<when I arrived in the States I was determined to leave a mark. In Africa and Haiti it was so damn difficult being recognized, they already have so many diseases and hazards down there, I could spend two centuries without nobody understanding my skills...but then I decided to move to a place where infecting people could give me the thrill of a great challenge. Still, some years passed before someone realized I was there. I was sending 20 people to the hospital coughin their guts out and doctors were giving the credits to pneumonia, 50 people with skin stains and my lights were stolen by bloody herpes. Finally I decided to enter the hospital with something different, Sarcoma Kaposi, a creepy guy that cannot be easily mistaken by acne even by the most dull of general practitioners.

Finally they understood I was causing all these psycadelic symptoms and I was given a name!>>

Science in the City

Mr AIDS has made it to Copenhagen. How exciting! On this epic occasion Mr AIDS has prepared something very special for his Danish friends, despite the fact that Northern Europe is not exactly the best place for him.

<<As I've repeatedly said in my philosophical performance>> says Mr AIDS at the arrivals of Copenhagen airport <<viruses are not racist creatures. We do not really care whether you are black, or white, Italian, Indian or Danish, but I must admit that northern Europeans are killjoys. Based on recent statistics - but Professor Botta will be able to explain that better than me, after all he loves being precise and accurate - nearly 20% of the Nordic population is resistant to HIV.

How is that possible? Pure luck, I say!

In the 16th century, one of the many late Medieval plagues killed most of the european population. Only those fortunate enough to carry an incomplete receptor, the CCR5 survived the plague, only to proliferate like rabbits and transforming this receptor into a common  a pain for myself!>> concludes Mr AIDS.
